Cagliari: a lounge on the beach

Until you get there and discover its beauty, Cagliari is likely to remain the voice-over that gave the TV weather forecast in the seventies in the main cities of Italy. Thanks also to low cost flights and cruise ports, the capital of Sardinia, overlooking the Gulf of the Angel , has become much more accessible and easy to arrive to ... and the tourist arriving here for the first time will be amazed in discovering an elegant city, full of shortcuts and corners to photograph and with a beautiful lounge on the sea illuminated by streetlights and stars, Terrazza del Bastione di San Remy. It has been built on 7 hills like Rome, Lisbon and Istanbul, which represent the towns: Castle, Tuvu Mannu, Monte Claro, Monte Urpinu, Colle di Bonaria, Colle di San Michele. The city is spread partly in hilly areas, such as the historic districts of Castle, Stampace, Marina and Villanova, and partly in flat areas, which represent the districts that arose here in the nineteenth century. In Cagliari, you can spend a pleasant weekend alternating beach and cultural tourism. Poetto is the main beach which stretches for about eight miles from Sella del Diavolo up the coast to Quartu Sant’Elena. The Poetto is also the scene of night life for the youth of the town, open at 24 hours, 365 days a year. Here you can listen to live music, go to discos, take dancing classes ... We recommend a stroll among the stalls to taste sea urchins, mussels and mullet ... The ponds along Viale Poetto Molentargius, are besieged by pink flamingos in spring and summer. Another beach worth mentioning is the small beach of Calamosca, located between the area of Campo Sant’ Elias and Poetto. Leaving the beach you can walk without getting tired into the upper and lower part of the city. In the Castle District are the Bastion of Saint Remy, at the top of a grand stairway above Piazza Constituzione, this is a viewpoint which derived from the late nineteenth century and the beginning of the 900 on the Spanish fortifications of the Zecca and the Sperone, the Torre dell'Elefante in Via Università, the Cathedral in Piazza Carlo Alberto, the Roman amphitheater next to the beautiful botanical garden. In the lower town do not miss the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Bonaria, Piazza Yenne, the churches of St. Michael, St. James, St. Dominic, the Basilica of San Saturno.
For those wishing to take a stroll in open air, there are many parks: beside Molentargius on the pond, with fabulous flamingos, there is also the beautiful park of Terramaini, and Monte Urpinu Monteclaro.
For lovers of modernity and digital, Mediateca was recently opened in Via Mameli, the MEM: Mediateca of the Mediterranean. It gives you the idea of being in northern Europe: a vast space with a very modern outdoor lounge bar where every day many students stop by to study in front of a sandwich or a coffee ...
At dinner time you'll be spoiled for the choice ... if you want to stay downtown and dinner we recommend the Sardinian "Sa domu Sarda”with mainly meat dishes, and then the thousands of touristic inns in the marine district facing the harbor. For a good pizza you can choose between a tasty dish and a splendid view: in the first case, we recommend the pizzeria "Fantasma 2" in a secondary street in the Castello area, small restaurant (booking required) where you can ask for a pizza with three toppings. In the second case, it is a must to visit the Castle pizzeria in the hill park of San Michele, where you can enjoy a 360 degree view over the city. Another beautiful place near the beach is Calamosca ice cream bar with terraces Otherwise other excellent ice cream are also in Piazza Yenne, try the ones at Stefino. If you want to go to drink a beer go to the Brewery (Birrificio)in Cagliari (http://www.ilbirrificiodicagliari.com/), if you would like good dinner of fish and you do not mind staying in the center take a jump to the Mola Sarda, in Viale Trento , fresh seafood, delicious appetizers (trying to tasting everything), not very popular with tourist but with the local town people of Cagliari, which is a guarantee.
