The heart of the green Mediterranean: The Sila

Even today, visitors and tourists continue to surprise in meeting, at a few kilometers from the Tyrrhenian or the Ionian coast, such a variety of woods (pine, larch, beech, oak, chestnut) interspersed with grasslands and pastures, rich in streams and lakes so as to render this plateau, often compared to northern European countries, the real green heart of the Mediterranean. The north side of the plateau, overlooking the plain of Sybaris, called the Sila Greca, denomination due to the migration routes of ancient Greek and Albanian populations, ethnic groups and cultures are still alive and present in the towns situated on the slopes of these mountains. The Sila Grande extends to the center of the massif and includes the most populous and active areas of the plateau: the famous tourist destinations of Camigliatello Silano and Lorica, known especially for the ski resorts of Monte Curcio and Monte Botte Donato, artificial lakes Cecita and Arvo, the extraordinary territory of National Park of Calabria in the Sila Grande which includes among others the impressive forest of Fossiata small nature reserve and the Giants Fallistro, a colony of ancient pine trees, the last forest primeval species , survived centuries of deforestation, plants that reach over 40 meters in height and a diameter of about two meters. Further south lies the Sila Piccola, which includes some of the most intact habitat silane, as the valley of Tacina, Soleo gorge , the vally of Ciricilla and of Crocchio and Gariglione and dense forest, one of the the most famous forests of Calabria, at the center of the National Park of Calabria, the Sila Piccola. Among the artificial lakes of Ampollino and the Passante are the most important tourist centers: Palumbo, attended both summer and winter, Buturo, Mancuso Village, the historic resort features the wooden houses in typical alpine style of the early twentieth century .
The silane territory becomes a theater in winter for winter sports, lovers of alpine skiing and cross country skiing. In summer, Silas offers the most extensive hiking networks, traveled on foot, horseback or mountain bike to discover the sunny valleys, streams stuck between the rocks, which slope woodland fairy lakes frequented by lovers of water sports.
