Romantic and decadent, Porto will leave an unforgettable sweet . memory
You will walk along the Douro River that runs through the city shortly before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. You breathe in the tranquility of the village overlooking the green and brackish water with its pastel colors and posters that advertise the labels of Porto, undisputed star of the place.
Ferreira, Sandeman, Ramos Pinto, Niepoort's Taylor ... are some of the 58 wineries that you can visit tasting glasses of red and white port and tawny rose and that are located in Vila Nova de Gaia, connected to the city from Ponte de Dom Luis I, the most beautiful of the six arches that overlook the river, built in 1866 by an assistant of Gustave Eiffel, at two levels. From this part of town is the monastery of Serra do Pilar lights up the night with great stage effects.
The best way to visit Portugal's second city is to walk aimlessly leaving surprised by the sweet melancholy of old houses, clothes hanging, flowers, umbrellas, pinwheels, and everything is put in the sun on the balcony.
The city, UNESCO heritage, is a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and neoclassical coexists perfectly with the bold contemporary works of the School of Architecture of Porto, as the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Fundacao de Serralves, operates the largest Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza Vieira, and the building of the Faculty of Architecture.
Ribeira, situated at the foot of the Dom Luis 1, is the ideal place for walking or writing postcards sitting in the sun, while the rebelos ferry from one side or swing moored to the quay. From here you can head along the narrow streets as the Rua das Flores, which climbs to the Sao Bento Station Belle Eopoque. Just a little more, from the Tower Clérigos have a splendid view over the city.
Always above Ribeira a jewel not to be missed is the Church of Sao Francisco, whose interior is completely covered with gold. It was the enormous wealth generated by the discovery of gold mines and precious stones and precious woods in Brazil from the new continents, can make such a work of art.
Outside the church you can take tram 1, and in twenty minutes you find yourself on the Ocean, in the residential district of Foz. Walk to the lighthouse being careful not to get wet from the waves crashing on the pier, then lunch in Rua de Franca Herois, full of fish restaurants, grilled in the street!
To breathe the sweet idleness Portuguese can have a coffee at the Hotel Majestic, located in the most bustling shopping and the city: the Rua Santa Catarina. Opened in 1921, has retained its beautiful Art Nouveau window, the black leather sofas, mirrors and richly decorated walls. Another place where losing one's thoughts is the library Lello & Irmao, in Rua das Carmelitas. It’s a monument of neo-Gothic architecture, with its white facade decorated, the large windows, stucco, woodwork and the double staircase. A unique place where you can also enjoy a coffee on the first floor.
Do not miss a visit and maybe even a concert at the House of Music, on the heights of the city, the new concert hall opened in April 2005. Works by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, his large irregular polyhedron symbolizing openness to all forms of music.
In Porto there are restaurants where to taste the local dishes such as "tripe", cod, and many fruits of the sea or the numerous lounge bar where you can taste and buy wines from the best labels.
For those who love the night should not miss a walk on Rua de Paris Gallery, where the nightlife comes alive after 24.00, including local bars and disco.
